Your basic rights under the employment contract

The key things the Labor Law guarantees: a documented contract, wages on time, working hours, leave, and the fees your employer pays.

The contract

  • Your contract must be written and documented on the Qiwa platform. You can view it, and accept or reject it, from your account.
  • Read the contract before accepting it: the basic wage, allowances, profession, duration and probation period.
  • The probation period cannot exceed 180 days, and it must be stated in the contract.

Wages

  • Your wage is paid on time into your bank account; it must not be delayed.
  • If your wage is three months late, you may transfer your services without your employer's approval.

Working hours and overtime

  • The maximum is 8 hours a day or 48 hours a week; during Ramadan, for Muslims, 6 hours a day or 36 hours a week (Article 98).
  • Overtime is paid at the hourly wage plus 50% (Article 107).

Leave

  • Annual leave is at least 21 days, rising to 30 days after 5 continuous years with the same employer (Article 109).
  • Sick leave: 30 days on full pay, then 60 days at three quarters of the wage, then 30 days unpaid, within one year (Article 117).
  • Paternity leave is 3 paid days within 7 days of the birth; maternity leave is 12 weeks on full pay.

What your employer pays

Your employer pays the recruitment fees, the iqama and work permit fees and their renewal, late fines on them, profession-change fees, exit and re-entry visas, and your return ticket home when the work relationship ends (Article 40).

Your passport is your personal document. Don't hand it over to anyone in exchange for a promise.

Use the annual leave calculator to work out your leave days.
